Staying Safe Out & About

Crime can occur to anyone, anywhere, at anytime even at home, at a bar, at a club, or at a party. Securing your home is important, but maintaining your own safety can save your life. Consider these important tips when preparing to be in social settings, especially after dark and if alcohol is consumed.

  • Travel with friends. Not only is it more fun to go out with friends, but it is a smart safety measure, too. If you arrive with a friend, make sure you and your friend leave together even if others try to convince you otherwise.

  • Stay clear of excessive alcohol and illegal drugs. Alcohol dulls instincts so people cannot process and react as quickly in dangerous situations. To maintain a good awareness of your surroundings, consider not drinking or significantly limiting your drinking for the night. Refrain from partaking of illegal drugs.

  • Trust your instincts. If you ever feel uncomfortable, seek help. You can find assistance from bar or party staff or others in attendance. If you feel a friend is in a dangerous situation, help him/her.

  • Keep in touch. Let people know where you will be, what your plans are, and what time you expect to return. Use cell phones to maintain contact. Keep batteries charged and carry portable chargers in your car or wherever necessary.

  • Carry your photo ID with you at all times.

  • Be careful about how giving personal information to strangers. Simple details such as where you work or your major can be enough information for criminals to locate where you live and hang out.

  • Observe your surroundings. Never leave your drink unattended. Watch others who purchase drinks for you to confirm that nothing is slipped into your glass. Be aware of the location of exits, bathrooms, and other secure areas.

  • Watch out for your friends. Take care of them if they are unable to care for themselves. Have a conversation with them later about any behavior that you perceived as risky or dangerous. Express your concern for their safety and security.

  • Maintain your safety when you arrive home. Never leave your doors unlocked for roommates and friends who are still out. Encourage everyone to carry a key or arrange alternate plans such as calling by cell phone. Better yet, encourage friends and roommates to return home at the same time you do.

Students can be particularly vulnerable to being drugged and sexually assaulted in social settings. Consider not drinking to avoid potential dangerous situations. If you do drink,

  • Never leave your beverage unattended.

  • Decline any beverage, including alcohol, that is offered to you by someone you do not know well and trust.

  • At a bar or club, accept drinks only from the bartender or server.

  • At parties, do not accept open beverages from anyone.
