Security Mechanisms
Your safety primarily depends on you, but neighbors and residential communities can work together for the security of everyone. This site contains contact information for emergency responders if you feel that you or a neighbor is in danger. Prevent breaches in security by taking simple safety measures.
-
When inspecting a housing unit, be sure to check the exterior for adequate lighting in parking areas, pathways, front door, and surrounding areas. Once you move in, report any exterior light outages immediately.
-
Inquire whether security guards are on duty and if police patrols are conducted regularly.
-
Always lock doors and windows. Request additional latches or safety locks be installed if necessary.
-
Use the peephole and ask who it is before opening the door.
-
Leave a light on if you go out at night or on vacation.
-
Install smoke detectors in your residence. If your residence has detectors, check the batteries and operation periodically.
-
Know who your neighbors are, so you will have a general idea of who “belongs” and who might be suspicious.
-
Report any suspicious behavior to police. Watch and listen for unusual occurrences such as loud noises or strange people loitering around.
-
For non-emergenices, know which law-enforcement jurisdiction your residence is located, for example, in East Baton Rouge Parish, but outside the city limits, call the EBR Sheriff's Office (EBRPSO). Inside the Baton Rouge City Limits, call the BR Police Department (BRPD)
-
For emergenices, dial 911.
Keeping rental properties free from crime
The Louisiana Nuisance Abatement Law requires that landlords keep their property free of drug-related criminal activity and prostitution. The penalty for failure to clean up property after notice is closure of the property for up to 5 years. Report any observed criminal activity to your landlord first, and also to the Police or Sheriff’s Department.
