Pet Regulations
Consider how a pet may disturb the general peace of the property and neighborhood. Clean up after the pet if it intrudes on other’s property. Pets that are constantly barking and growling, confined to the backyard open area at all hours, or allowed to roam freely through the neighborhood can be serious nuisances. Neighbors may call the city-parish Animal Control Center if you fail to maintain control of your pet. According the East Baton Rouge Parish Code of Ordinances, Title 14., Sec. 2, the animal owner’s or possessors are held responsible and liable for any actions taken by their animal. In addition, owner’s must adhere to the following regulations:
- All dogs shall be kept, at all times, from running at large.
- All cats shall be kept, at all times, from running at large.
- No dog or cat shall cause a nuisance.
- The owner or possessor of a dog or cat shall be held responsible for any behavior of the dog or cat that is deemed a nuisance under the provisions of this part.
- The owner of any animal shall be responsible for any veterinary bills incurred by the animal control center as a result of veterinary care rendered to that animal.
- No dog shall cause any excessive noise making or excessive barking.
Any person who violates any of these provisions shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and may be fined any amount up to five hundred dollars ($500.00) or imprisoned for not more than 180 days, or both fined and imprisoned.
Yard Pets
Local law requires a minimum of 1200 square feet of yard available for the first dog you have, and 300 additional square feet for each additional dog. A yard with less than 1200 square feet is considered to be an animal pen, with special requirements.
Exotic Pets
It is illegal to keep certain wild or exotic animals as pets in East Baton Rouge Parish. If you have an unusual pet, or if you think you might want to get one, contact Animal Control to find out if your pet is allowed in East Baton Rouge Parish or if any special permits are required.
